A 50-minute journey from the hotel to Olomouc city will kick-start our half day tour in which our private guide will take us around the city familiarizing us with its wondrous sites and their history. Owing to its past status of being the capital city of Moravia, this city has the largest historic preservation zone outside Prague. We will explore the city center’s 12 churches starting with St. Wenceslas Cathedral which has been Moravia’s most important cathedral for 900 years.
We will then visit the historical St. Moritz Church for a view of Central Europe’s largest pipe organ before advancing to the underground spring, at St. Michael’s Church, on which Olomouc was founded. Our guide will also take us to a chapel with a preserved torture chamber in its dungeons and the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Site, the Holy Trinity Column on the main square, which is so large that there is a chapel inside it as well.
Besides the 12 famous churches, we will also visit the renaissance Town Hall that dominates the center of the main square, the astronomical clock-which is the only one outside Prague in the entire country, and the series of fountains dotted around the old town. Apart from the outstanding single buildings, the cobbled lanes, squares and courtyards of Olomouc also offer wonderful places to explore. Lonely Planet describes the cityscape of Olomouc “possibly Central Europe’s most underrated” city. After exploring this beautiful city, we will return to your local hotel.
